Somerset falls at Lexington Christian 35-34

For the first time of the 2019 high school football season, the Somerset Briar Jumpers tasted defeat last Friday night.

Playing on the road at Lexington Christian Academy, the top-ranked Jumpers lost in a heart-breaker, thanks to an LCA two-point conversion late in the game that gave the Eagles a one-point advantage — a lead that would wind up being the final score of the game in favor of LCA, 35-34 over Somerset.

For Somerset, it was the Briar Jumpers first loss of the season, as Robbie Lucas’ club fell to 7-1 on the year, dropping a very important district contest to the Eagles in heartbreaking fashion.

Quarterback Kaiya Sheron completed 10-18 passes through the air for 274 yards, with those two scores going to Kade Grundy and Carson Guthrie.

Grundy hauled in three catches in the loss for 89 yards and a TD, while Guthrie had two receptions for 66 yards and a touchdown.

On the ground, Cam Austin led the Somerset rushing attack with 61 yards on six attempts, while Jase Bruner ran for 59 yards on eight carries.

Somerset — 7-1 on the season — will return home on Friday night, taking on Washington County.

Kickoff for that contest is set to get underway at 7:30 p.m.
