Both Somerset teams fall to Danville in All A

SPRINGFIELD — Both of Somerset’s basketball teams had been on a roll of late, but that did not carry over into Tuesday night at the All A 12th Regional Girl’s and Boy’s Tournaments.

Facing both of Danville’s squads in the opening round of the tourneys at Washington County High School, Somerset did not have the answers for the Admirals or the Lady Ads.

In the girl’s contest, Somerset fell to Danville by a 71-43 margin.

Bobby Bowling’s club had been pretty hot of late, winning four of its past five games, but Somerset ran into a buzz saw in Danville on Tuesday evening.

The loss dropped the Lady Jumpers to 8-9 on the season with the disappointing outcome. Somerset will not play again until January 26th, with a road game scheduled at Garrard County.

Meanwhile, Jeron Dunbar and the Briar Jumpers fared no better against Danville in the boy’s tourney.

In a somewhat low-scoring affair, Somerset fell to Danville — the 12th Region’s top team by way of a won-loss record — by a 58-48 score.

Kade Grundy led Somerset with 17 points and Chase Walker added 16 for the Briar Jumpers, but it would not be enough on a night when Danville had much of the momentum in this affair in the second half.

This game was all knotted up at 19-19 at the intermission, but coming out of the locker room, that’s when Danville seized control of this contest, by outscoring the Briar Jumpers in a decisive third quarter 19-10.

“I thought we had a great game plan going in, and our kids were prepared and ready,” stated a disappointed coach Dunbar after the contest.

“We never could get anything going consistently on offense,” continued the Somerset coach. “The third quarter really hurt us. We gave up back to back three’s, including a buzzer beater that gave them the momentum. We were trying to play catch up the whole fourth quarter. Danville’s length and size bothered us when we drove. There are bigger things ahead for us, and bigger tournaments that we want to win.”

The loss dropped Somerset to 11-8 on the season, and snapped the Briar Jumpers five-game winning streak in the process.

Somerset will not return to action until January 25th, going on the road to play at Barbourville.
