Warriors fall to Cardinals

By DOUG EADS

The Southwestern Warriors dropped a heartbreaker to district rival Wayne County on Friday night, falling by a 64-63 margin.

Cole Dysinger — who led Southwestern with a game-high 30 points — hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer for the Warriors, but the officials waved it off, ruling that he didn’t get the shot off in time.

The loss was a tough one for the Warriors with the way things turned out, but Chris Baker’s club proved that his young team is coming along at a rapid pace, despite falling to 1-3 on the season with the setback to Wayne County.

“I’m proud of the kids and I thought they did a tremendous job,” stated the Warrior coach after the contest.

“They battled, they played hard, but our youth and inexperience showed in crucial moments,” added coach Baker. “There were just moments where their (Wayne County) seniors kind of knew how to handle the situation, and our juniors are still trying to figure it out.”

Dysinger helped keep the Warriors close with Wayne County, thanks to his career night.

Trailing the Cards 35-26 at halftime, the junior guard led a ferocious comeback in the second half that fell just short in the end.

As for Wayne County, the Cardinals — playing without  arguably their best player in Aubrey Weaver — were led by Garren Dishman with 18 points, while Thomas Spencer added 16, helping the Cards remain perfect on the season at 3-0.

“Give Southwestern credit for a great game plan and really good execution,” stated Wayne County head coach Rodney Woods after the contest.

“The took some things away from us on the offensive end,” Woods added. “Their physicality really bothered us. We made some big plays on the offensive glass down the stretch to pull out the win.”

The Warriors will return to action next Friday night taking part in the Pikeville Invitational Tournament, as Southwestern will meet up against Covington Holmes.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This Southwestern team is only going to get better and better with more experience. Meanwhile, Wayne County is still the odds on favorite as the team to beat this season inside the 12th Region.
